Heydar Aliyev Cultural Center
The Heydar Aliyev Cultural Center is a 101,801.0 square meters building complex in Baku, Azerbaijan and is noted for its distinctive architecture and flowing, curved style that eschews sharp angles. Zaha Hadid was appointed as design architect of the Heydar Aliyev Center following a competition in 2007. The Center, designed to become the primary building for the nation’s cultural programs, expresses the sensibilities of Azeri culture.
The Center houses a conference hall (auditorium), a gallery hall and a museum. All functions of the Center, together with entrances, are represented by folds in a single continuous surface. The building was nominated for awards in 2013 at both the World Architecture Festival and the biennial Inside Festival. Heydar Aliyev Center had an official opening ceremony on May 10th 2012.
